Experiencing the world through a community focused environment.
“It takes a village.” More than a proverb, we believe this to be the key to raising resilient, compassionate and engaged kids. Turning our hearts to connections with family, global communities, and the natural world around us, we’re bringing our world-schooling Spanish language immersion experience to the relaxed Yucatec-Maya village of Ek Balam, Mexico.
We invite your family to join this inclusive community which values the gifts of intentional living, cultural exchange, exploration, and adventure. Hosted December through February, this is the perfect opportunity to escape to warmer weather and embrace outdoor enjoyment this winter. Living in Ek Balam for 1-3 months at a time, you will find time to nurture and nourish with a slowed pace and few modern distractions in this small and quaint rural village.
Our community is open to people from all walks of life. Whether you’re first time travelers, experienced explorers, single parents, or digital nomads, we welcome you in your journey to Ek Balam. Everyone will find Anahata particularly appealing with opportunities to join forces and receive support from other parents in this intentional community. No matter your current comfort level with traveling or joining a multi-family community, this is sure to be a fun and rewarding experience of all.
Housed in an inviting hacienda, families living at Anahata Worldschooling Community will enjoy a balance of spacious private living areas and communal spaces. The community is an opportunity to come together to form our own environment, where the kids can play and families can hang out with other Worldschooling families from around the world.
Nourishing vegetarian meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) and laundry service will be provided, allowing you more time for learning, developing, and growing with one another. A communal kitchen is also available for families who prefer to cook or spend time creating in the kitchen.
A co-working space is also available for parents, while plentiful outdoor spaces invite play, inquiry, and relaxation.
Community preservation through artisan craft, traditional cuisine, and sustainable agriculture are treasured here. You will often see people hand weaving hammocks or preparing fresh tortillas under their palapa, a thatched roof dwelling. As you explore, plan to get to know the local residents who are eager to exchange ideas and stories. Spanish and traditional Maya dialects are both spoken locally. Courses in language, Maya cooking, and weaving are offered by members in the community. Weekly guided cultural excursions will be available at an additional cost.
Soccer game with the local kids.
Our friends from the local community.
In every sense of the world, we will explore together. Learning about each other, the world, and certainly ourselves, Anahata Worldschooling Community will offer space, tools, and connections to deepen understanding and reflection. We’ll have the opportunity to do something different every day – whether it’s a yoga class, art/music class, hammock weaving or taking an educational excursion. We’ll grow and have fun as we share our skills and create an unforgettable experience! We know each of our community members has interests, knowledge, and talents to share. So let’s collaborate in building a deeply enriching lifestyle together.
Planting medicinal plants.
Daily yoga classes are provided. Other special classes can be arranged based on interest of our community members. Ayurvedic Treatments will be available to support mind and body health (additional cost).
Diverse adventures await you during the day. Taking early morning strolls is an ideal past-time in the village and offers an opportunity to bird watch or discover unrestored remnants of the ancient Maya city. A quick bike ride to Ek Balam Archaeological site opens you to a world of history, inspiration, and rejuvenation. Once serving as the seat of the Maya Kingdom, this site is one of the most important in the Yucatán. With interesting Preclassic and Postclassic design, it is also one of the most visually unique. Your family will surely gain new perspectives climbing the main temple, where the impressive plaster tomb of king Utik Kan Lek Tok is still preserved.
Ek Balam Cenote is located in the archaeological site and can be frequented easily from the village. Cenotes, or freshwater sinkholes, were once considered sacred portals to the underworld by the Maya people. Now, most are open to the public for swimming, tubing, rope swinging, and snorkeling. The Yucatán Peninsula is home to a condensed number of cenotes, a truly special encounter for all to appreciate.

We are a family of 5 that loves adventure! Our passion is to explore the world with our kids. We officially ended the rat race and have taken our lives back. It feels so liberating and our only regret is not having done this earlier. This year we decided to quit our jobs, travel and focus on what matters most, our family.
We moved to Mexico in Ek Balam (2 hours from Cancun) where we open the doors to families who share our vision and to create new adventures. Our community is open to people from all walks of life. Whether you’re first time travelers, experienced explorers, single parents, or digital nomads, we welcome you in your journey to Ek Balam.
“Self-education through play and exploration requires enormous amounts of unscheduled time—time to do whatever one wants to do, without pressure, judgment, or intrusion from authority figures. That time is needed to make friends, play with ideas and materials, experience and overcome boredom, learn from one’s own mistakes, and develop passions.”
― Peter O. Gray, Free to Learn: Why Unleashing the Instinct to Play Will Make Our Children Happier, More Self-Reliant, and Better Students for Life
